Party Through the Longest Night of the Year at Sciencework's After Dark Event

Things to do this Winter in Melbourne

Scienceworks, Australia’s science museum, invites you to celebrate the winter solstice at this exclusive 18+ event.

All ground floor exhibitions will be open for adults-only access for one night only, 6.00 pm-10.00 pm, Friday 21 June. Embrace your inner child among the fuzz and fixtures of Ground Up's tactile, sensorily
soothing playspace before diving into Air Playground, the smash-hit temporary exhibition featuring the beloved bouncy castle, competitive paper plane hangar and more.

Ride the nostalgia wave and test your mettle against Australia’s most legendary athletes in Sportsworks - including the iconic virtual race against Cathy Freeman - before giving the grey matter an equal workout in the timeless technology exhibition Think Ahead.

Roving live music and performers - including DJ Kelsie Cosmic - accompany solstice-themed craft pop-ups and photo booth so you and your companions can memorialise the winter solstice forever. Grab a bite and a drink (or two) from the bar – including mulled wine and hot chocolate – and enjoy!

Scienceworks After Dark includes a seat in the Planetarium to soak up one of three spectacular full-dome film experiences:

6.30 pm - What’s in the Sky Tonight: Solstice Edition (40 mins)

Discover the astronomy behind the winter solstice in this specially curated, live Planetarium show. Led by Scienceworks’ expert presenters, learn above the sky above as it really appears that night, before exploring our galaxy and beyond in mind-bending detail.

7.30 pm - The Dark Matter Mystery (38 mins)

Join some of Astronomy’s brightest minds on the hunt for the theoretical glue binding the universe together – dark matter – in this enthralling, hypnotic documentary. Perfect for fans of Interstellar and the mysterious side of space and physics.

9.00 pm - Space Tour (50 mins)

Tour the universe in a Planetarium cruise through some of space’s most captivating visual marvels in this spellbinding visual documentary. Glorious auroras and nebulae, eerie black holes, spellbinding supernovas and more abound.

Separate tickets are available for those who want to skip the Planetarium and dive right into the museum itself.

Plus, catch dinner and a show: once you’re all partied out, present your ticket to Scienceworks After Dark at Foodie Wonderland Grazeland – right next door to Scienceworks at 20 Booker Street, Spotswood – for free entry on the night.
