Grocery Bill Hacking
Like everyone else, we’ve felt the pinch when it comes to the rising cost of living, especially with food. Our usual budget of $150 for two adults and three cats is no longer cutting it, and we’re often spending well over $200 a week. To curb these rising costs, we’ve implemented a few strategies, which we’ve outlined below.
1. We Signed Up for Woolworths Everyday Extra Membership
We were already Everyday Rewards members, meaning we accrued points every time we shopped at Woolworths. We’d check the app each week to see which card offered the better bonus points.
At some point, we noticed the Everyday Extra yearly membership was available for half price, so we both signed up for $35.00 each. With this membership, we get:
10% off one shop per month at Woolworths or BIG W (in-store or online).
2x Everyday Rewards points at Woolworths and BIG W (in-store or online).
Subscriber-only free products and exclusive offers.
The membership also offers better bonus points deals, so we continue using whichever card has the best offer. On top of that, we usually get one free product each per month (although they’re not always items we’d typically use). And with two 10%-off codes each month, we’ve seen significant savings.
If you’re interested, you can use our code here, and we’ll both get a bonus 1,500 points.
2. We Place Our Weekly Woolworths Order Through ShopBack
We also place our weekly click-and-collect order through ShopBack, earning a small percentage of our spending as cashback. We pay for the ShopBack Plus membership, which gives us additional perks like:
$5.00 off any gift card each month.
Boosted cashback rates.
10x cashback on Plus Day.
Entry into monthly giveaways.
Priority customer service.
Since searching for groceries in the ShopBack app can be tricky, I usually add everything to my cart outside the app first. Then I log in to my Woolworths account through ShopBack to finalise and pay for the order.
3. We Pay for Our Orders with Gift Cards
Whenever we pay online, we use gift cards to save extra money. Gift cards often come with cashback offers when purchased through ShopBack or CashRewards. I also get 4% off Woolworths gift cards through Student Edge, but this requires a student ID/email, which won’t suit everyone. If you’re not a student, you can also get 4% off Woolworths gift cards with Everyday Insurance.
4. We Switched to Everyday Insurance
We decided to switch our contents insurance to Everyday Insurance after learning it offers an additional 10% off at Woolworths each month. The only catch is that this discount can only be used in-store, so we now do one in-person shop each month.
In addition to the discount, Everyday Insurance offers gift card discounts through its portal. While the insurance premium is slightly higher than our previous policy, the savings from the 10%-off code make up for it. We’ve also made one claim for spoiled refrigerator goods and found the process smooth and hassle-free.
5. We Upload Receipts in Exchange for Gift Cards
Finally, we upload all of our receipts into an app called Receipt Jar. Once we accumulate enough points, we can cash out for gift cards. While we only manage to cash out about $10 a month, every little bit helps offset the rising cost of living. If interested, use our referral code SHERTJQM for 50 bonus points upon signing up. I can never find the spot in the app to put the referral bonus so feel free to contact them to find out where to put it once signing up (I have also contacted them about this and will add to this post once they have gotten back to me).
These are just a few strategies we’ve implemented to save money when shopping at Woolworths. We haven’t covered other food-saving tips, such as shopping outside major supermarkets, meal planning, or hunting for deals, but we might include those in a future blog post.
Do you have any tips we’ve missed? We’d love to hear them in the comments below!
